The project
Sankofa is a 40-key nature resort set on 10 hectares of cork and pine forest near the village of Melides. Three accommodation types spread across the landscape, each placed to sit within it rather than on top of it.
Sustainability is not an add-on here. It is the operating model. Fixed structures occupy less than 1% of the property. Over half the land is a natural preserve with active ecosystem restoration. A permaculture garden and regenerative food forest supply the kitchen. Water systems capture, treat, and reuse onsite. Architecture uses natural materials and renewable energy. The resort hires locally, year-round, on non-seasonal contracts.
The name Sankofa comes from the Akan tradition. It means "go back and get it." Move forward, but carry what matters.

Location
Melides sits on Portugal's Alentejo coast, 133 km south of Lisbon. The area is attracting major luxury hospitality brands, but strict municipal restrictions on new tourism licenses keep supply tight. Approved projects in this corridor command premium rates.

What the corridor charges
These are the developments neighboring Sankofa. Their nightly rates reflect the demand this location already commands.
~€1,090 /night
Opening 2028. 70-key hotel + 58 branded residences.
~€733 /night
13-room boutique hotel by Christian Louboutin.
€1B+ development
300 exclusive private residences. High-profile international buyers.
Same corridor. Accessible positioning. 40 keys across three accommodation types.
~€311 /night avg.
Sankofa targets the accessible premium segment of a corridor where ultra-luxury developments are already proving demand. A broader guest base at a lower entry price, in a market with constrained supply.
The resort
Three accommodation types spread across 10 hectares of pine-dotted terrain, connected by a central lodge, swimming pool, wellness area, and permaculture garden.

10 units among the pine forest
Scattered among the trees, each with a sunlit deck. Some feature private plunge pools or jacuzzis. Bookable individually or paired for families and friends.

10 units on secluded hilltop locations
36 m² of interior living space with a 50 m² private deck. Canvas, wood, and linen. High-end finishes with a warm, natural atmosphere.

20 units across pine-dotted landscape
20 m² of airy interiors. 220 m² of private outdoor space per tent. Shared facilities and central pool. Insulating liners and climate control for year-round comfort.
The experience

Farm-to-table dining from the resort's own permaculture garden. Open-fire cooking. Long communal tables under the sky. A cantina and local produce shop.
Sauna rituals and cold plunges in summer. Forest showers. Yoga and meditation. Massage under the trees. An outdoor gym built for the setting, not a hotel basement.
E-bikes through the dunes and forests. Horseback riding to the beach. Surfing at Comporta. Golf at the new championship course. Flamingos at Lagoa de Melides.
Fire-cooked feasts after dark. Stargazing from the hilltop tents. Storytelling around the fire pit. Nights where time slows and the sky opens up.
